Ann Nelson (*1960, Stockholm) studied photography and fine arts in Zurich, Switzerland and Hamburg, Germany, and has a BA (Hons) Arts and Humanities degree.
Ann Nelson’s artistic program, which consists of an exploration – through the medium of painting – of the topic of landscape, can fittingly be summarised under the heading of “landscape reviewed”. The term “review” is applicable in its varied definitions, including analyzing, assessing, reflecting and re-evaluating. Accordingly, under review here is “landscape” as natural environment, as a concept, etc., but not least the history of landscape painting itself. In her work, the artist references not only landscapes she sketches and photographs on her hikes, but also 18th and 19th century European landscape paintings. While the artist looks back to past concepts and art forms, she takes this forward towards current conditions and forms of expression, to a “now”.
“The supple fluidity of the paints and their rapid, at times wild application is overcome by means of exact painterly research. A compositional order emerges from the dialectic of contraries, such as colour and line, form and anti-form, frontal light and backlight, stillness and motion – an order that integrates incidental elements. This invests her paintings with a state of uncertainty; the metaphor of becoming is manifested in a painterly process. Becoming is the inherent contradiction, directing itself against the form of the achieved and documenting the world as an experimental process.”
