For Brigitte Pénicaud (born 1954 in France) vessels are about gestural expression. She throws her jugs, vases and bowls on the wheel, and intentionally leaves the traces her hands have made. Later she presses and changes these in a spontaneous and intense, almost destructive act to achieve an individual and freed sculptural form. With the same gestural expression she reworks and completes the surfaces with expressive paintings. Finally she fires the vessels in a woodburning kiln, often so long that the glaze begins to boil. Brigitte Pénicaud is not searching for technical and formal perfection, but rather she is making the energy that she puts into her work visible.
