Kirsten Brünjes

*1943, Australia

Three principles characterise Kirsten Brünjes‘ (*1964) artistic work, all of which run against current trends: daring to be imperfect, playing with ambivalences and communicating inwardness. The artist succeeds in continuously creating new scenes, capturing mentalities in the moment, and investing each figure with an individual expression. All figures communicate with each other and we – as viewers – become a lasting element of the scenery.

The eyes, which Kirsten Brünjes designs with meticulous attention to natura- listic detail, serve to take up contact and to communicate the internal and ex- ternal world. In the clear and direct gaze of these anti-heroes an amazing self- awareness is revealed, and the human dimension of the figures can be felt in this subjective encounter. Nothing is as it seems at first sight as Kirsten Brünjes continuously has us wandering off on the wrong track in order to disclose multi- layered levels of meaning.
