Caro Suerkemper’s work navigates between tradition and subversion, between beauty and irritation. Ambivalence plays an important role in her practice – specifically there where historical forms, social rituals and conventions reach a tipping point and lose their taken-for-grantedness. She achieves this through the implementation of “historical camouflage”, camouflaging her interventions in the guise of the familiar in order to reveal subliminal conflicts: power and powerlessness, control, desire, shame. The body is central to her work; a body that is at the same time a projection surface and resistance – at times seductive, at times deformed, at times ironically broken.
